Do you know what motherboard revision you'll be installing your modchip onto? Yes 1.6(b) requires extra steps(lpc rebuild) but 1.5 have extra step as well. Check bottom left section of the install guide you linked. Yes both d0 and BT signals on the modchip need to be properly interfaced. However, if you wish for your Xbox to always boot from the modchip, you can ease up the installation by soldering the 'BT' pad on the modchip to ground. This simulates a long power button press which is required to make your Xbox boot from Aladdin XT (short power button press makes it boot from TSOP).
You can check. As a personal preference, I would make the modchip always ON if I don't intend to boot from the onboard TSOP anymore. Will it work out of the box with my new HDD and I can run just pop Slayers or Hexen in to actually softmod the original TSOP? If that's possible, it'd be preferable in case the aladdin ever craps out or something, since it'll essentially be bricked again without the original stock HDD if I keep the dashboard. First, make sure that both your motherboards are not 1.5. I think you require a multimeter to do so.
There are tutorials scattered on the Web that instruct you on how to properly identify your motherboard revision. 1.5 are very, very rare but you never know!
In second; you are correct. The chip bypass loading the BIOS from the stock TSOP and instead fetches it from the Aladdin XT flash chip. Yes it will work right out of the box with your new HDD. In your case, if the HDD is brand new, I suggest you burn a copy of Hexen disc (I prefer Auto-Installer Deluxe both both are good) and do the following operations, in order and using the same disc for all of them: * Flash modchip with Evox M8+ for 1.0-1.5 Xbox. * Format HDD with a single F extra partition (assuming you're still going with that 160GB drive) * Install MS stock dashboard on C partition, latest version is 5960 * Install whatever custom dashboard you want on either C or E partition.
I suggest UnleashX to start with. Once those steps are completed, try to boot your Xbox without any disc in the drive. It should boot to UnleashX Dashboard.
